Your grading scheme: the percentage bands that turn a mark into a letter grade and a grade point.
When to use it
Once when the school is set up, and again if the grading rules change. Every exam points at a scale, so at least one has to exist before any result can be published.
Before you start
Know the bands your school uses, and the grade point that goes with each. You need rights to create masters.
Where to find it
Masters > School > Grade Scale.
The fields on this screen
| Section | Field (on screen) | What to enter | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranges | Min % | Lowest percentage in this band, counted in. If two bands overlap, the one with the higher Min % wins. | Yes |
| Ranges | Max % | Highest percentage in this band, counted in. A mark that fits no band is left with no grade at all. | Yes |
| Ranges | Grade | The grade given to any mark inside this band, such as A+ or C. | No |
| Ranges | Grade point | Points for this band. They become the student's GPA on the result, unless the student has failed. | No |
| Ranges | Remark | (not explained yet) | No |
| Scale | Scale name | for example Nepal Letter Grading | Yes |
| Scale | Type | Says which kind of scale this is - GPA (letter grade), Percentage or Division. The bands below do the grading. | No |
| Scale | Active | Only active scales appear when you pick a grade scale for an exam. Untick this and nobody can pick it. | No |
How it works
- Name the scale, then add one grid row per band: the lowest and highest percentage of the band, the Grade letter, the Grade point, and an optional Remark.
- A percentage is matched to the band whose range contains it. Leave no gap between bands, and do not let two of them overlap. A percentage that falls in a gap gets no grade. One that falls in two bands is given only one of them.
- Choose the scale on an Exam. When that exam's results are published, each student's overall percentage is turned into a Grade and a Grade point from this scale. Each subject line on the marksheet is graded from the same bands.
- A student who failed the exam carries no grade and no grade point, whatever their percentage.
- Editing a band does not change results that are already published. Publish the exam's results again to apply the change.
Tips and common mistakes
- Cover the whole range from 0 to 100. Any mark that falls outside your bands comes back with no grade against it.
- Keep the Grade point in step with the letters. The overall figure a student is given is the grade point of the band their percentage falls in.
- Do not delete a scale that exams already point at. Add a new one and use it on new exams.
