Measuring Unit Group

Last reviewed

A unit group is the category a measuring unit belongs to, for example Weight, Volume or Quantity-Count. Every unit you create (kilogram, litre, piece) is filed under one group.

When to use it

Rarely. The system ships 21 standard groups that cover almost every business. Add one only if you measure something unusual that none of the standard groups fit.

Before you start

  • Nothing else is needed first. Unit groups sit at the top of the units setup.
  • You need an admin role. Data-entry roles can view groups but cannot change them.

Where to find it

Masters > Units > Measuring Unit Group.

The fields on this screen

Field (on screen) What to enter Required
Unit Name Name for this group of related units, such as Weight or Length. Yes
Unit Description Optional note about this group of units. It describes the group, not any single unit. No

Adding a record

  1. Open Masters > Units > Measuring Unit Group.
  2. Click Add / New.
  3. Enter a Unit Name (for example "Packaging - Bundle").
  4. Add a description if you want one.
  5. Click Save. The group appears in the list, and you can now pick it when you create a Unit of Measure.

Changing or deleting a record

  • To edit, open the group from the list, change the name or description, then Save.
  • The 21 standard groups are shared system records. You cannot rename or delete them (the system will refuse), so create your own group instead.
  • You cannot delete a group that already has units assigned to it. Reassign or remove those units first.

Worked example

A trading company sells goods by the carton and the pallet. None of the standard groups fit "packaging counts", so they add a group:

  • Unit Name: Packaging - Bundle
  • Description: Box, Carton, Pallet

Then, under Unit of Measure, they add "Carton" and "Pallet" and assign each one to this group.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Pick the dimension the unit really measures. A litre belongs in Volume, not Weight. The wrong group breaks unit conversions later.
  • The system blocks a second group with a name that already exists (another "Weight", for example).
