A subledger category is the type of a subledger, such as Customers, Suppliers or Employees. It groups your subledgers so you can see and report them by kind.
When to use it
At setup, before you create any subledgers. Every subledger must be given a category, so you need at least one. After that you rarely change the list.
Where to find it
Accounts > Subledger > Subledger Category (it sits in the Subledger setup area).
The fields on this screen
| Field (on screen) | What to enter | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Subledger Category | Name of the category, used to group subledgers together. | Yes |
Adding a record
- Open the Subledger Category screen.
- Click Add / New.
- Enter the category name.
- Click Save.
Starter categories
Your demo company comes with five: Customers, Suppliers, Employees, Agents and Others.
Tips and common mistakes
- Set these up first. You cannot add a subledger until at least one category exists.
- A category is a broad type, not a single account. "Customers" is a category; "Acme Traders" is a subledger inside it.
