A summary of where your cash came from and where it went during a period, grouped into three activities: Operating (day-to-day trading), Investing (buying/selling assets and investments), and Financing (loans, capital, owner funds). The bottom line is the net change in cash for the period.
When to use it
To understand cash movement, not profit. Profit (from the Financial Statement) can be high while cash is tight, or the other way round. This report shows the actual cash picture.
Before you start
- Vouchers for the period are entered and posted.
- Your cash and bank accounts sit under the cash and bank account groups. That is how the report knows which entries moved cash.
Where to find it
Reports > Finance > Cash Flow Statement.
The fields on this screen
| Field (on screen) | What to enter | Required |
|---|---|---|
| From Date | Start of the period | No (defaults to the fiscal-year start) |
| To Date | End of the period | No (defaults to today) |
Running the report
- Open Reports > Finance > Cash Flow Statement.
- Set From Date and To Date (or accept the defaults).
- The report shows three rows (Operating, Investing, Financing), each with its net cash flow, and a total row for the net change in cash. Summary cards at the top repeat the same four figures.
Reading the result
- A positive number is cash coming in, and a negative number is cash going out.
- Operating is cash from running the business (customer receipts, supplier and expense payments).
- Investing is cash spent on or received from assets and investments, such as buying equipment.
- Financing is cash from or to lenders and owners (loans taken or repaid, capital introduced).
- The Net Change in Cash is the sum of the three: how much your total cash and bank balance moved over the period.
Tips and common mistakes
- For a full-year figure, From Date must be the first day of the fiscal year (Shrawan 1, which falls in mid-July; its English date moves by a day from year to year). Check the date box before you rely on a full-year total: a later start leaves out the beginning of the year.
- This is a cash report, not a profit report. Only entries that actually moved cash or bank appear.
- Use the active organization selector to see one company's cash flow, or "All" for the consolidated view.
