A BOM is the recipe for making a product. It lists the raw materials and components that go in (Inputs) and what comes out (Outputs) for one production run. The factory uses it to know what to consume and what to produce when a production order runs.
When to use it
Once for each product you manufacture, plus a new version whenever the recipe changes. Production orders are based on these BOMs.
Where to find it
Masters > Manufacturing > Bill of Materials.
How a BOM is laid out
- BOM Details (the header) names the recipe and the finished product, and says how much one run yields.
- Inputs holds the components consumed: one row per material, with its quantity per yield and unit.
- Outputs holds what the run produces. That is usually one Primary product, plus any by-products or waste.
The fields on this screen
| Section | Field (on screen) | What to enter | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| BOM Details | BOM Number | auto | No |
| BOM Details | BOM Name | Name for this recipe, so you can pick it on a production order. | Yes |
| BOM Details | Version | Revision label for this recipe, such as 1.0. It is a label only - orders pick a recipe by its name. | No |
| BOM Details | Primary FG Product | The main finished item this recipe produces. | Yes |
| BOM Details | Primary FG Sub-product | Optional variant of the finished item, such as size, colour or grade. | No |
| BOM Details | Yield Qty (per run) | How much of the main item one run of this recipe produces. | Yes |
| BOM Details | Yield UOM | Unit the yield quantity is measured in. | Yes |
| BOM Details | Effective From | Date this recipe starts to apply. It is for your records - it does not stop a production order using it. | No |
| BOM Details | Effective To | Date this recipe stops applying. Blank means open-ended. It does not stop a production order using it. | No |
| BOM Details | Status | Keep the recipe on Draft while you are editing it. Set it to Approved when production may use it. | No |
| BOM Details | Description | (not explained yet) | No |
| Inputs | Product | Raw material or component this recipe consumes. | Yes |
| Inputs | Sub-product | Optional variant of the item, such as size, colour or grade. | No |
| Inputs | UOM | Unit this material is measured in. | Yes |
| Inputs | Qty / Yield | How much of this material is needed to produce one yield quantity. | Yes |
| Inputs | Scrap % | Extra material expected to be wasted, as a percentage - enter 5 for 5%. Leave 0 if there is no wastage. | No |
| Inputs | Critical? | (not explained yet) | No |
| Inputs | Cost / Unit (snapshot) | Cost of one unit of this material at the time you type it. Nothing updates it later - refresh it yourself. | No |
| Inputs | Notes | Optional note for this line, such as a specification or a quality requirement. | No |
| Outputs | Product | Finished item, by-product or waste this recipe produces. | Yes |
| Outputs | Sub-product | Optional variant of the item, such as size, colour or grade. | No |
| Outputs | UOM | Unit this output is measured in. | Yes |
| Outputs | Qty / Yield | How much of this output comes from one yield quantity. | Yes |
| Outputs | Output Type | Marks this line as the main product, a by-product or waste from the run. | No |
| Outputs | Value / Unit (for cost split) | (not explained yet) | No |
| Outputs | Notes | Optional note for this line, such as a specification or a quality requirement. | No |
Adding a record
- Open Masters > Manufacturing > Bill of Materials and click Add / New.
- Fill the header: BOM Name, Primary FG Product, Yield Qty and Yield UOM.
- In Inputs, add a row for each component: pick the Product, its UOM and the Qty / Yield.
- In Outputs, add the Primary product (and any by-products or waste).
- Set Status to Approved when the recipe is ready to use, then Save.
What's already there
13 sample BOMs (seed data) for the demo's manufactured products.
Tips and common mistakes
- Fill both grids. A BOM needs at least one Input and one Output (the Primary product).
- Qty / Yield means "per one yield run". If a run yields 100 units, enter how much of each component those 100 units need.
- Keep a recipe in Draft while you are still editing it. Set Status to Approved only when production may use it.
