A one-box list naming the kinds of product group you can have, such as Raw Material, Finished Goods or Service. Each product group picks one of these.
When to use it
Only when you need a kind of group the standard list does not cover. For most companies the list that comes with the product is enough and is never touched.
Before you start
You need an admin role.
Where to find it
Setup > Accounts Setup > Product Group Type.
The fields on this screen
| Field (on screen) | What to enter | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Product Group Type | Names a kind of product group, such as Raw Material or Finished Goods. It fills Type on Product Group. | No |
How it works
Saving adds the name to the Product Group Type list on the Product Group master. As far as the product shows today, that is all it does. It is a name that a product group carries, and no stock or accounting report groups or totals by it directly.
Renaming an entry changes what the Product Group master shows from then on. Groups already pointing at it keep pointing at it and show the new name. Deleting one that groups still use leaves those groups with a kind that no longer exists, so move the groups to something else first.
Tips and common mistakes
- Keep the names short. They appear inside a picker on the Product Group screen.
- This is not the same as Product Type on the Product master. Product Type tells the system whether an item is a raw material it consumes or a finished good it produces.
