A division within a class (A, B, Ruby and so on), with how many students it holds, which room it sits in and who its class teacher is.
When to use it
When you set a class up, and again whenever a class is split into more sections or a class teacher changes.
Before you start
The Class / Grade must already exist, because every section belongs to one. The teacher you want to name as class teacher must exist as an employee.
Where to find it
Masters > School > Section.
The fields on this screen
| Field (on screen) | What to enter | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Class / Grade | The class this section belongs to. Everywhere else in the school screens, sections are listed under it. | No |
| Section name | for example A, B, Ruby | Yes |
| Capacity | How many students this section is planned to hold. | No |
| Class teacher | The teacher in charge of this section. They must already exist as an employee to be picked here. | No |
| Room | (not explained yet) | No |
| Active | Only active sections appear when you pick a section on other school screens. Untick this to retire one. | No |
How it works
- Once saved, a section can be picked on Enrollment. That is where a student is actually put into a class and section for an academic year.
- Attendance and results are reported by class and section, so a student's records are grouped under the section they are enrolled in.
- Capacity is the intended size of the section. It is recorded for planning and does not stop further enrolment, so check the roll before you admit above it.
- Active takes a section out of use without removing it. If a section has been used, untick it instead of deleting it.
Tips and common mistakes
- Section names repeat across classes (every class has an A). That is correct, because a section is always read together with its class.
- To move a student between sections, change their enrolment, not this screen.
- Changing a class teacher here changes it for the section from now on. It does not change anything already recorded.
