Unit of Measure

Last reviewed

The list of measuring units your business uses: Pieces, Kilogram, Litre, Meter and so on. You pick a unit whenever you set up a product or enter a quantity on a voucher.

When to use it

When you need a unit that is not in the list yet (for example Tonne, Dozen or Roll), you add it here once. From then on it appears in every quantity dropdown.

Before you start

  • The unit's Measuring Unit Group should already exist. It usually does, since 21 standard groups ship with the system.
  • You need an admin role to add or change units.

Where to find it

Masters > Units > Unit of Measure.

The fields on this screen

Field (on screen) What to enter Required
Unit Name Name of the unit, such as Kilogram or Piece. Yes
Unit Code Optional code for this unit. It is separate from Unit Symbol, which is the short form like kg. No
Unit Symbol Short form shown on documents, such as kg or pcs. Yes
Decimal Figure Number of decimal places for quantities in this unit, such as 0 for pieces or 3 for kilograms. No
Unit Group The group this unit belongs to, such as Weight or Length. Yes

Adding a record

  1. Open Masters > Units > Unit of Measure.
  2. Click Add / New.
  3. Enter the Unit Name and Unit Symbol, and pick a Unit Group.
  4. If you want, set the Unit Code and Decimal Figure.
  5. Click Save.

Changing or deleting a record

  • To edit, open the unit from the list, make the change and Save.
  • The system will not let you delete a unit that a product or a voucher line already uses. Stop using it instead.
  • The five built-in units (Pieces, Kilogram, Litre, Box, Meter) are shared and cannot be changed.

Worked example

A factory weighs raw material in tonnes:

  • Unit Name: Tonne, Unit Symbol: t, Unit Group: Weight, Unit Code: TON, Decimal Figure: 3.

Now "Tonne" can be picked on product and production screens.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Symbols must be unique. If "kg" already exists, you cannot reuse it.
  • Decimal Figure must be a number; letters are rejected.
  • Put the unit in the right group, or conversions will not work later.
