Revenue and cost per project, read straight from the general ledger and sorted by the kind of account each entry hit.
When to use it
To see whether a site is making money, and which accounts the money went through.
Before you start
- The site exists as a cost centre marked as a project.
- Vouchers for it carry that project on their accounting lines. An entry with no project cannot appear here.
- You need view access to the Construction reports.
Where to find it
Reports > Construction Co. > Project P&L. The same report is also listed under Reports > Projects.
The fields on this screen
This report has no filter controls. Use the column search above the grid to narrow it to one project, one account group or one date.
How it works
- One row is one accounting line on one voucher, so the report is a listing rather than a summary. Revenue and Cost each carry a total at the foot. The difference between those two totals is the project's result.
- Section is worked out from the account, not chosen by anyone: an account filed under an income group is Revenue. Anything else that reaches the report is Cost.
- Revenue is credit less debit on that line, so a credit note against a sale shows as a negative and reduces the total. Cost is debit less credit, so a purchase return shows as a negative there.
- Only income and expense accounts reach this report. Money moving between the bank and a customer is a balance-sheet movement and is deliberately absent, so this is a profit report and not a cash report.
- The lines come from the general ledger without a posted-only restriction, so a voucher that already carries accounting lines can be counted before it is posted.
- Entries posted before the project tagging was corrected carry no project and do not appear. On a workspace that has been running a while, this shows the activity since that correction, not the whole life of the site. Read the earliest date in the list before treating a total as the project's total.
Tips and common mistakes
- A project that looks unusually profitable is usually one whose costs were posted without the project on them. Check the Ledger for the cost accounts over the same dates.
- This report does not know about the contract value. Use BOQ vs Actual for what is left to bill, and Subcontractor Statement for what is still owed out.
