The role a product plays: Raw Material, Work in Progress, Finished Goods, Fixed Asset, Service or Store Consumption. It tells the system how an item behaves in stock and in production.
When to use it
Hardly ever, because the standard list ships with your system. Add a type only if your business needs a category beyond the six built-in ones.
Before you start
You need an admin role. This screen is part of product setup.
Where to find it
Product setup. It is not on the main Masters menu; open it from the product configuration area.
The fields on this screen
| Field (on screen) | What to enter | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Product Type | Name of the product type, such as Raw Material or Finished Goods. | Yes |
Adding a record
- Open Product Type setup.
- Click Add / New.
- Enter the type name.
- Click Save.
Changing or deleting a record
- The six standard types are shared and cannot be changed.
- A type you added yourself can be edited or deleted, as long as no product uses it.
Worked example
These are the standard types you will see: Raw Material, Work in Progress, Finished Goods, Store Consumption Goods, Fixed Assets and Service Product.
Tips and common mistakes
- Type names must be unique and cannot be blank.
- Pick the right type for each product. It affects how the item is used in production and stock.
