Quiz Attempt

Last reviewed

One learner's sitting of one quiz, with the score they got and whether they passed.

When to use it

To look up how somebody did on a quiz, and to see who has passed before you sign a course off.

Before you start

The Quiz must exist, and the learner should already have an Enrollment on the course. You need view rights on this screen.

Where to find it

Knowledge and Training > Quiz Attempt.

The Knowledge and Training group is switched off in the main menu for now, so the entry is not shown. Until it is switched back on, open the screen from a link someone sends you or from a saved bookmark.

The fields on this screen

Field (on screen) What to enter Required
Quiz Which quiz this attempt is for. Its pass mark and its total marks are what the score is measured on. No
Enrollment ID (not explained yet) No
Learner Type Which kind of person sat this quiz: User, Employee, Student or External. It sets the list they come from. No
Learner ID Id of the user/employee/student/external record No
Attempt # Which try this is for the same learner and quiz. Nothing here stops or counts further attempts. No
Score Set by grading: the marks earned as a percentage of the quiz total. Do not type it in yourself. No
Passed Ticked by grading when the score reaches the quiz pass mark. A quiz with no pass mark always passes. No

How it works

Score and Passed are worked out by marking; you do not type them. Marking reads the answers recorded against the attempt and decides each question. It then sets Score to the marks earned as a percentage of the quiz total, and ticks Passed when that reaches the quiz's Pass Score %. A quiz with no pass mark passes every attempt.

You can run marking again after you correct a question or an answer. It recalculates from scratch and does not add to the previous result.

An attempt has no effect on the course. Completion counts finished lessons, so failing a quiz does not hold a learner back, and passing one does not move them forward.

Tips and common mistakes

  • An attempt created by hand here has no answers recorded against it, so marking it gives no score. The answers are held on a separate Attempt Answer list, which is view only and which nothing fills in today. A quiz therefore cannot be sat and scored through these screens.
  • Attempt # is a note. Nothing counts or limits how many times a learner tries the same quiz, whatever Max Attempts on the quiz says.
  • Do not type over Score or Passed. Both are replaced the next time the attempt is marked.
