Generate Holidays

Last reviewed

A one-button job. It reads the festival catalogue, works out when each festival falls in a Nepali year you choose, and writes those days into the Holiday list.

When to use it

Once, near the start of each Nepali year, to build that year's holiday list instead of typing twenty or thirty days by hand.

Before you start

  • The festival catalogue must be up to date on Festival Master.
  • Every movable festival must have this year's date recorded on Festival Year Override, or it will be passed over.
  • You need create rights on the Holiday screen. This job writes into that list and is checked against it.

Where to find it

Setup > Calendar Setup > Generate Holidays. It also opens as a panel from the Holiday list.

How it works

  1. Choose the Nepali year, and a branch if the days off apply to one branch only. Leave the branch empty when the whole company closes.
  2. Preview first. The preview writes nothing. It sorts every festival into three lists: Created (days that would be added), Updated (days already there that would be refreshed) and Skipped, each with the reason. The button that runs it for real only becomes available after a preview has run.
  3. Read the Skipped list. People often miss this step. The usual reasons are a movable festival with no date recorded for this year, a festival whose applicable years do not cover this year, or a day that already exists and is being left alone. You can fix a movable festival with no date from the preview itself, using the small date box on that row, and then preview again.
  4. Run it. Days are added to the Holiday list. Each one carries the festival it came from and takes the festival's name. Its type and paid tick follow the festival: a national holiday becomes a paid public day, anything else an unpaid optional day.

To refresh an existing year: a day that already exists for that festival in that year is left alone unless you tick the refresh option. With it ticked, the day's date, name, type, paid tick and branch are all rewritten from the catalogue, and any change someone made to those days by hand is lost.

Running it twice is safe as long as you leave the refresh option off. Existing days are reported as skipped, not duplicated.

This job never touches days you added by hand (they carry no festival), in either mode.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Once the run is finished, nothing reminds you that a festival was skipped and produced nothing. Deal with the skipped list while it is in front of you.
  • Fill in the movable dates for the whole year first. Running the job, fixing one date and running again is slower and easier to get wrong than doing the overrides in one sitting.
  • Generate before you start editing days by hand, and use the refresh option carefully afterwards.
