Inventory Valuation

Last reviewed

One page showing what your stock is worth right now, item by item. A Recompute button rebuilds those costs from scratch.

When to use it

  • After changing which voucher types move stock.
  • After a backdated purchase, issue or return has been entered into a period that was already costed.
  • When a stock value on a report looks wrong but the quantities look right.

Before you start

  • The costing depends on the Inventory Voucher Effect setting being correct, so fix that first. Recomputing on a wrong setting rebuilds the wrong answer.
  • Being able to open this page does not mean you can use Recompute. The button checks your rights on the Inventory Voucher Effect screen instead, so you can see the grid and still be refused. If that happens, ask for edit rights on Inventory Voucher Effect.

Where to find it

Setup > Inventory Setup > Inventory Valuation.

How it works

The grid is your live stock valuation, the same figures the Stock Valuation report shows. It is read straight from the costed records, so it is only as current as the last recompute.

Recompute goes through every stock movement in date order and rebuilds each item's cost from the beginning. It uses each item's own method: weighted average, or first in first out. When it finishes, it reports how much it produced and reloads the grid.

Two things to know before you press it:

  • It replaces the costing entirely, instead of adding to it. Running it twice does no harm, and running it after a correction is the normal way to bring the values back in line.
  • It posts nothing to your accounts. No voucher is created, no journal is written and no ledger balance moves. It only rebuilds the stock costing that the stock reports read.

For a large company with a long history this takes a while. Let it finish; do not reload the page.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Quantities and values are worked out separately. A quantity that looks right next to a value that looks wrong usually means the costing has not been recomputed since a backdated entry.
  • Recompute does not fix a wrong purchase rate. It re-costs whatever the vouchers say, so correct the voucher first, then recompute.
