Mark Entry

Last reviewed

Where you write down the marks a class scored in one subject of one exam, one row per student.

When to use it

After an exam paper has been marked, to enter the scores for one class, section and subject.

Before you start

  • The Exam must exist and its date sheet must be filled in. The full marks and pass marks for each class and subject come from there, not from this screen.
  • The Class, the Section, the Subject and the students must all exist. Students are picked straight from the Student screen; an enrolment is not needed.
  • The exam must point at a Grade Scale before its results can be worked out.

Where to find it

Entry > School > Mark Entry.

The fields on this screen

Section Field (on screen) What to enter Required
Marks Student The student this row's marks are for. The list is not narrowed by class, so check the name. No
Marks Theory Marks scored in the written paper. Theory and practical are added together for the subject total. No
Marks Practical Marks scored in the practical. Leave it blank when the subject has no practical part. No
Marks Absent Tick if the student did not sit this paper. An absent subject fails that student's whole result. No
Marks Remarks Optional note against this student's marks for the subject. No
Entry Exam The exam these marks belong to. Full marks and pass marks come from this exam's subject list. No
Entry Class Class whose students you are marking on this sheet. No
Entry Section Section being marked. Leave it blank to mark the whole class on one sheet. No
Entry Subject Subject being marked. One sheet covers one subject, so repeat it for each subject in the exam. No

How it works

  1. One record covers one Exam, Class, Section and Subject. Pick those first. The Section list narrows to the class you chose, and so does the Student list on the grid.
  2. Add one grid row per student with the Theory and Practical marks. Tick Absent for a student who did not sit the paper. A student can appear only once in a record, so to correct a mark you edit the row that is already there.
  3. Saving records the marks and nothing else. No grade, total or result is produced yet.
  4. Results are worked out from the Exam screen, by publishing that exam's results. That step adds each student's marks across every subject of the exam and works out the percentage against the full marks on the date sheet. It reads the grade and grade point from the exam's Grade Scale, sets the division, and ranks the students within their class.
  5. A student who was absent, or who scored below the pass marks in any one subject, is failed for the whole exam and carries no grade and no grade point.
  6. Publishing again after a correction is safe. The exam's previous results are replaced, not added to, so re-publish whenever a mark changes.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Enter every subject. The overall total is built from all the subjects of the exam. A subject nobody has entered lowers everyone's total, with no warning.
  • Full marks and pass marks are not on this screen. If a percentage looks wrong, check the exam's date sheet first.
  • Absent is not the same as zero. An absent student fails the exam outright.
  • A corrected mark does not reach the result or the marksheet until the exam's results are published again.
